Tired of having to patch up holes in your ships? Don't like metal slugs being firmly implanted into your ship's engine core? Just slap on thick, sturdy Armor to keep those metal chunks at bay. It is specifically designed to counter a foe's mass drivers by simply placing more metal between you and their guns. However, be forewarned that beam weapons eat through it fairly quickly, and explosive missiles penetrate much better than slugs, so use other forms of defense if you plan on going up against them.
