The player can choose between various forms of government, with some granting easier control of the senate, at the cost of economy, and vice-versa. The following are the types from most control to least:

Dictatorship Edit

Gov Imperial

This is the starting form of government. You can do what ever you want, since have imperial control over the senate. You don't receive any economic bonuses, but your planets are more easily satisfied and hence are less likely to revolt.

complete control over the senate means that you retain your bonuses from your political party. Also, if you direct your civilization to declare war then it will without fail. Compare this with more advanced governments in which a vote must be won in the senate before your civilization can go to war.

  • Economic Bonus: 0

Interstellar Republic Edit

Gov Republic

An Interstellar Republic is a government type in which there are free elections for the senate.

It is harder to keep morale up among citizens however you get a nice bonus to your economy.

  • Economic Bonus: 10%

Technology Edit

Technology Name Interstellar Republic
Short Description Allows us to transform to an interstellar republic.
Technology Type Government
Research Cost 800
Prerequisites Alliances
Tech Leads to Star Democracy
Tech Provides Diplomacy Ability +10, Culture Ability +5
Long Description With research completed on the interstellar republic, our government can now start to involve its citizens in the decision making process. By choosing to change to a republic, citizens in our empire will, for the first time, get to vote on their ruling party, whether or not to go to war, and what form of government they wish to belong to. So keep your people happy and they will vote in your favor.

Star Democracy Edit

Gov Democracy

Star Democracy is a social technology, and an advanced form of government. Civilizations ruled by a Star Democracy receive a 20% economy bonus. However, in order to change to a Star Democracy your approval rating must be high enough. The Senate will periodically undergo an election under a Star Democracy, with failure to control the senate leading to a loss of the political party bonus and the imposition of a political party penalty. Civilizations run by a Star Democracy must have Senate authorization before going to war.

  • Economic Bonus: 20%
  • No other bonuses, like one would expect from long description.

Technology Edit

Star Federation Edit

Gov StarFederation

Star Federation is a social technology, and is the most advanced form of government. Civilizations ruled by a Star Federation receive a 30% economy bonus. However, in order to change to a Star Federation your approval rating must be high enough. The Senate will periodically undergo an election under a Star Federation, with failure to control the senate leading to a loss of the political party bonus and the imposition of a political party penalty. Civilizations run by a Star Federation must have Senate authorization before going to war.

  • Economic Bonus: 30%
  • No other bonuses, like one would expect from long description.

Technology Edit

Technology Type Government
Research Cost 5000
Prerequisites Star Democracy
Tech Leads to
Tech Provides Diplomacy Ability +10, Culture Ability +5
Long Description The ultimate form of interstellar government also requires a great deal of effort to maintain. People have very high expectations of a central government when each planet has so much independence. However, it also allows for far greater economic and industrial capacity.

Notes Edit

  • An incorrect text description in earlier versions of the game claimed there were also research and industrial bonuses from the advanced government types. There is only an economic bonus for the government type.

"...that's a clear glitch in the text display. As the designer and the one who implemented the code, I can assure you that the text description should not say that. I will see that that is changed." -- Avatar Frogboy (Stardock) Monday, March 06, 2006 2:07 AM

In v1.2 the text description still incorrectly states the various government types provide 25%, 50%, and 75% bonus to your economy, production, and research. If true these would be overpowered but in fact only provide a 10%, 20%, and 30% bonus to your economy.

In the Twilight of the Arnor, the technologies listed above will grant different bonuses to different civilizations due to the differences in their technnology trees. For Terrans, the economy bonus is replaced by an influence bonus, while for some others, it may be a diplomatic or economic bonus.
