I'm a bit confused about the version numbering.

I've installed the retail version, then downloaded the 'Retail Update' from the website, which says 'Update your retail boxed version of Galactic Civilizations II to the latest official released version: v1.0X English Edition.' The game now says it's version v1.0X.2. I don't see this in the existing list on this page. Normally I'd assume that a version like 1.0.2 was earlier than a version like 1.0.10, but that would mean the 'official version' is 8 or more patches behind the actual latest, not counting the betas.

Some info on whether we have to install the stardock central tool would be helpful too. (I'm worried it's spyware, based solely on a single user post I saw at amazon)

Go ahead and download Stardock Central. It really is the best method for downloading patches. Plus, it gives you access to the latest beta versions of the 1.1 patch. (Although there's a HORRIBLE bug in the latest version - starports are indestructible!)

Still, there are enough improvements in the recent patches to make it worthwhile.
